About EMV Tags
EMV tags are identifiers used in EMV chip card transactions to label specific data elements. They are a fundamental part of the TLV (Tag-Length-Value) data structure used in EMV communications.
EMV Tag Structure:
- Tags are typically 1-3 bytes in length
- Single-byte tags have the most significant bit of the first byte set to 0
- Multi-byte tags have the most significant bit of the first byte set to 1
- Tags are represented in hexadecimal format (e.g., 9F26, 82, 5F24)
Tag Sources:
- EMVCo: The official EMV standards body
- Payment Networks: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, etc. define their own proprietary tags
- ISO Standards: Some tags are defined in ISO standards
Common EMV Tags:
- 5A: Application Primary Account Number (PAN)
- 5F24: Application Expiration Date
- 82: Application Interchange Profile
- 8E: Cardholder Verification Method (CVM) List
- 95: Terminal Verification Results (TVR)
- 9B: Transaction Status Information (TSI)
- 9F02: Amount, Authorized
- 9F03: Amount, Other
- 9F10: Issuer Application Data
- 9F26: Application Cryptogram
- 9F36: Application Transaction Counter (ATC)
EMV tags are essential for understanding and debugging EMV transactions. They provide a standardized way to identify and interpret the data exchanged between cards, terminals, and issuers during payment processing.
EMV Decoder tools perform all calculations client-side for maximum security.
No sensitive data is ever transmitted to our servers.
